Attached is a signature page for a Petition for Order of Emergency Protection or Injunction asking the Court to stop the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership GNEP from building and operating a nuclear waste reprocessing plant and nuclear waste burner reactor in Chaves County about half way between Roswell and Tatum.
The model for the nuclear waste reprocessing plant they are planning to have here in Chaves County is in Great Britain. People living there have a high level of cancer. The British recently spent equivalent to over Thirty Billion Dollars to clean up that facility.
The nuclear waste burner reactor appears to be still just an idea that hasn’t been tried. But it does have some characteristics similar to an incinerator.
According to many sources from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the New Mexico Environment Department, none of these agencies would have authority to inspect and enforce the law at the GNEP site, because it will be a Department of Energy/Department of Defense facility.
The highest-ranking expert in radiation studies for the US Public Health Services says that he is not aware of a nuclear waste reprocessing plant ever operating without hurting people in surrounding communities.
The United States currently has two low-level uranium enrichment facilities that produce fuel for nuclear power plants. One of them is in Ohio and the other is in Kentucky. (The proposed GNEP facilities that they are planning to have in Chaves County would receive high-level nuclear waste from all over the world). According to the US Public Health Services, the people living in and around these low-level uranium enrichment facilities are concerned about the following:
